What does it take for a tiny country town grocery shop to win Australian Store of the Year?
The answer, according to Spar Express Kalbar store manager Jaggi Toor, is to have the support of the community.
Spar Express Kalbar outshone 150 of its counterparts across Australia to win the coveted title of Spar Express Store of the Year at Spar Australia’s recent gala awards.
Mr Toor and store owner Zahid Zhan also had the honour of collecting the Spar Express Grocery Award for the second year in a row.
Mr Toor said being part of the community was key to their success.
“Winning Store of the Year was a dream come true, and we could not have done it without the support of all our customers and the local community,” he said.
“Serving our customers is our biggest priority, like for example we always have an extra staff member on hand to help elderly customers carry their bags to the car if they’re too heavy.”

He said taking pride in the appearance and cleanliness of the store also set Spar Express Kalbar apart from the rest.
“We’re really focused on quality control, cleanliness and being really well-presented at the point of sale, and our shelves are always really well-stocked,” he said.
“To win the Spar Express Grocery Award for the second year in a row was such a good reward, and it’s so exciting to have built on this by also winning Spar Express Store of the Year for the first time.”
