Scenic Rim ecotourism retreat Mt Barney Lodge has embarked on a mission to discourage its guests from bringing throwaway plastic on site year-round after a successful Plastic Free July.
With a focus on a single-use plastic water bottle ban, staff collected and counted the number of plastic water bottles and containers found in the bins each day during July. Staff presented these plastic water bottles to campers at the office each day.
Three days into the campaign, the number of plastic water bottles being thrown away on site dropped by 95 per cent.
During the month of July, in which Mt Barney Lodge recorded 2100 guest nights, staff collected just 103 plastic bottles and containers from their guests.
On the back of that success, they decided to keep campaigning to guests about reducing their plastic usage beyond Plastic Free July.
The business is continuing to encourage guests to refuse single-use plastic water bottles and swap them for alternatives like stainless steel or Nalgene.
Mt Barney Lodge Nalgene bottles are available for purchase from the site office, and bottles can be refilled at the campground taps.
